Title:  #ThisIsCool: launch of the Cooling for All solutions campaign and Chilling Prospects, Tracking Access to Sustainable Cooling, 2020

Organizer: Sustainable Energy for All

Abstract: The Cooling for All secretariat launched Chilling Prospects groundbreaking report series in partnership with and supported by the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) in 2018 with Chilling Prospects: Providing Sustainable Cooling for All as a global wake-up call – and was the first report to define and quantify the magnitude of the global cooling access challenge and call for new and sustained action to address the issue. The #ThisIsCool communication campaign is launching to enable partners to share sustainable cooling solutions with the world and to support the global path toward sustainable cooling for all.

Chilling Prospects: Tracking Sustainable Cooling for All 2020 serves as a tracking update that also examines the link between access to cooling and COVID-19, the benefits achieved by access to cooling on productivity and how to categorize sustainable cooling solutions. Building on the Cooling for All Needs Assessment launched in 2019, this report sets a path to optimizing sustainable cooling solutions in the Cooling for All Solutions Assessment toolkit that will launch late 2020.

Abstract: The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), in partnership with the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, will present research findings related to training and formalising the AC servicing technicians- a key need in emerging and developing economies to ready the HVAC sector for the impending refrigerant transition. The discussion will focus on tenets of training and institutionalising certification systems that enable job security and safety for technicians, optimise energy efficiency, and facilitate a smoother transition towards alternative refrigerants in keeping with countries’ Kigali commitments.

Abstract: Especially in developing countries and emerging economies, the demand for cooling is rising. Due to its considerable share of ozone- and climate-damaging emissions, the refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) sector is playing an increasingly important role, not only in ozone protection but also in climate and energy policy. The question is how all three together can use the RAC sector’s savings potential to achieve current national and international climate and development targets. This virtual side event will provide an overview of possible fields of action.

Find out and discuss on how to identify emissions origin and considerable savings potentials of the RAC sector in your country and learn about appropriate cooling strategies. Get insights in particularly effective instruments such as the use of natural refrigerants, the training of qualified RAC technicians and the integration of appropriate technologies such as R290 split AC and their benefits and opportunities for ozone, climate and energy policy.

Benefit from GIZ Proklima's years of experience in this field and take the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the different approaches with us. This side event will be followed by in-depth webinars on the respective topics which you can actively shape with your participation in this discussion.
