Experience and Preliminary Results of Early HFC Surveys Funded by the CCAC
Time Description Room / Location Level / Floor
13:00
Organizer: UNDP
Description:
During the side event, invited speakers from countries and implementing agencies will share and discuss results, challenges, and lessons learnt of conducting initial surveys of HC consumption in Bangladesh, Chile, Colombia, Ghana, Indonesia and Nigeria conducted with the financing through the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC). The surveys contain the overview of HFC consumption based on the analysis of production (if applicable) and imports, analysis of data accuracy to the extent possible, projection of growth of HFC consumption, and potential options for transitioning from HFC to low-GWP alternatives. Projects developed and utilized original methodologies to assess the HFC consumption depending on country context and circumstances. Carrying out each survey entailed extensive consultations and data gathering involving various government agencies, chemical and equipment suppliers and importers, industry associations and key end users. The side event will also discuss the methodology of translating HFC consumption into Emission Factors.

Refrigeration Certification
Time Description Room / Location Level / Floor
13:00
Organizer: UNEP OzonAction
Description:
The refrigeration and air-conditioning industry will increasingly have to adapt to both the technical and safety issues concerning the alternative refrigerants. Certification is the best practical method to verify the competence of personnel handling refrigerants and to ensure the correct installation, maintenance, repair and dismantling of a refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems.

The side event aims to better understand the importance of certification in ensuring the installation of safe and reliable equipment and provision of quality services through adherence to applicable standards leading to minimising of emissions and to demonstrate to service technicians and enterprises why it is in their interest to participate.

Launching of University Course for Engineers
Time Description Room / Location Level / Floor
14:00
Organizer: UNEP OzonAction
Description:
UNEP cooperated with two academic institutes in West Asia in developing special course for ODS management for engineering undergraduates. The course was offered to senior engineering students in the two universities i.e. Kuwait University (KU) and the American University in Beirut (AUB) where it was successfully introduced for few years. This year, UNEP in cooperation with the government of Lebanon decided to revise this course, update it in accordance with the latest global policy and technological development triggered by the Montreal Protocol. The university course will be ready for other engineering colleges/institutes early 2016.

Introducing hydrocarbons and improving insulation in the refrigerated transport sector in South Africa
Time Description Room / Location Level / Floor
18:00
Organizer: GIZ Proklima
Description:
The transport of perishable goods, mainly food stuffs, but also medicine, vaccines and flowers, requires refrigeration and insulated vehicles. Especially hot countries have a growing demand for efficient and safe refrigerated transport.
Currently, the available technologies for transport refrigeration units are systems with low efficiency, refrigerants with high global warming potential and ozone depleting substances, and high leakage rates. New innovative technologies are currently being piloted under the Transport Refrigeration Project in South Africa.
Within this event, GIZ Proklima will present a prototype refrigeration system working with a hydrocarbon refrigerant which is currently being developed in cooperation with the South African refrigeration industry.
This project is funded by the International Climate Initiative by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).

Using IMPACT to Model Long-Term HFC Consumption Under Proposed Amendments; and Discussion on Alternatives to High GWP Hydrofluorocarbons, Patents, and Indian Companies
Time Description Room / Location Level / Floor
18:00
Organizer: NRDC
Description:
NRDC with partners has developed IMPACT — the Interactive Montreal Protocol Amendment Comparison Tool — to compare the allowed HFC consumption under a proposed phasedown proposal. This spreadsheet-based, interactive tool allows users to compare the four existing amendment proposals, or build custom proposals with user-specified baselines, control schedules, and phase down steps. IMPACT shows the consumption implications for the globe or for any individual nation with available HFC and HCFC that can be inputted to the spreadsheet. Workshop participants will see a demonstration and discuss implications of proposed amendments globally and for several nations.
The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) will present findings from joint draft publication: Alternatives to High GWP Hydrofluorocarbons, Patents, and Indian Companies. All are invited.
