Solar Cold Room
Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire
The solar cold room is a mobile system with a container size ranging from 18 to 40 cubic meters. The cold room can provide storage temperature from 4°C to 20°C and is used for post-harvest storage of vegetables, fruits, and flowers. It has also an ice tank for milk storage with a capacity of 200 or 400 liters.
During the day, the ice storage tank is powered by solar panels with a condensing unit running on propane (R290). During the ice production, water inside the tank has a temperature of around 3°C, this water is transferred with a small pump to the evaporator inside the cold room, substituting the need to use the battery. During the night only the pump is working while the condensing unit can be on standby.
