The Koolboks solar-powered freezer relies on R-600a refrigerant. The freezer provides a storage solution with superior insulation and ice battery technology employed in the design. The ice batteries, when activated, retains cold energy and therefore reduce the amount of energy required by the compressor to cool down the freezer, which drastically improves the energy efficiency of the compressor. By storing energy in the form of ice, the freezer provides a 40% cost savings compared to standard off-grid cooling systems. In addition, the thick insulation retains the cabinet’s temperature and provides an autonomy of 4 to 7 days without solar power.
Koolboks freezers have been deployed in developing countries to provide small business owners with an affordable and reliable refrigeration solution. It has integrated it as a PAYGO technology. A lease-to-own business model helps to reduce the high upfront cost required to purchase solar refrigerators and to pay in small instalments using mobile banking.
