Facts and figures on the Ozone Secretariat’s emissions impact from meetings, and accelerating UN efforts on environmental governance and training.

Greening the Blue Report 2025 edition shows UN System’s Progress on Environmental Sustainability

The UNEP Sustainable UN (SUN) 2025 Greening the Blue Report presents the environmental performance and sustainability efforts of the UN system and its operations worldwide. With offices and personnel worldwide, the UN System remains committed to supporting people and the planet by minimizing environmental harm.

This year’s report includes UN-wide environmental performance data from 2024, as well as good practices, covering 312,084 people across 60 UN entities worldwide.

Key Facts

Emissions

In 2024, 44% of the UN system emissions originated from the operation of facilities. Out of the total emissions from facilities, 46.6% comes from generators, followed by purchased electricity, building refrigerants, boilers and heating. Generators are often the only viable solution in many of the sites where UN is operating, due to frequent electricity cuts, or even complete lack of a grid.

For the Ozone Secretariat specifically, our operations and facilities emitted 554 tonnes CO2eq in total, an increase from 2024. If we breakdown our emissions by source for 2024, 98 per cent came from air travel, 1 per cent from other travel, and the remaining 1 per cent came from our facilities, the same as for 2023.

11 years of climate neutrality

We are also pleased to announce that we are one of a few UN entities that were climate neutral for 2024, meaning that we offset 100% (or as close as possible) of our greenhouse gas emissions

Waste and water consumption

UN-wide, waste per capita has been decreased from 457kg in 2019 to 289kg in 2024. At the Secretariat, we generated 11 kg/person of waste, down from 28 kg/person in 2023. The water consumption by the Secretariat for 2024 decreased [?] to Xm3 compared to 215m3 in 2023.

Environmental Management System (EMS)

In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations and facilities by 2030, the Ozone Secretariat has developed an environmental management system (EMS) framework to mitigate and reduce its carbon emissions.
