The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis

2025 marks thirty years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action — the world’s most progressive blueprint for advancing gender equality. This year, on the International Day of the Girl, we raise our voices to celebrate girls not just for who they are, but for the change they lead.

The theme this year — Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis — is a powerful call to recognize girls as leaders, innovators, and changemakers in the face of global challenges. From climate change to conflict, girls are stepping up, speaking out, and shaping the future.

One such girl is Knox — a fictional yet symbolic character from the #ResetEarth campaign. Living in a dystopian future ravaged by environmental collapse, Knox embodies courage, resilience, and the power of youth-led action. This is her story.

Knox: A Girl Against the End of the World

In the year 2084, the world is broken. The skies are scorched, the land is barren, and humanity is haunted by a deadly disease called GROW — a mysterious illness that cuts lives short before the age of 25.

In a world that has forced its inhabitants to be tough, Knox, a fearless young woman in her early twenties, survives by scavenging for tech in the ruins of civilization. She’s resourceful, and fiercely independent. But she knows her time is running out. In 2084, humankind dies young because of a disease call GROW. She, too knows, that it will soon take her life. This pushes her to find a cure, no matter what it takes.

“Welcome to my world. Not much to look at right? Yeah, I agree. This is what happens when you leave the world in the hands of people who don’t care about the future. But hey, I used to be one of those people too. People have different ideas about what caused GROW, some blame the scientists, and others blame the ozone layer for not doing its job, but these arguments are all pointless as anyone who knows the answer is long dead.

But then everything changed. I found a time machine and seized the opportunity – the opportunity to make a change.”

Her turning point comes when she discovers a time machine buried in the wreckage at the junkyard. With nothing left to lose, she jumps back to 2055 — a world before GROW, but still teetering on the edge.

A Journey Through Time and Towards the Truth

The world of 2055 is hot — unbearably so. The sun burns her skin, and the people she meets are covered head to toe despite the heat. Confused and desperate for answers, Knox finds a leaflet that reads:

“It’s too late for the ozone layer, but it’s not too late for you. The cure is open for human testing.”

What is this ozone layer? Why is it too late? And how is it connected to the disease that destroyed her future?

Driven by urgency and hope, Knox begins a quest to uncover the truth. She learns that decades of environmental neglect led to the collapse of the ozone layer — Earth’s shield against harmful UV radiation. The damage triggered a chain reaction that altered ecosystems, weakened immune systems, and gave rise to GROW.

But knowledge is power. And Knox is determined to use it. Follow Knox on her quest to find out what had gone wrong. Why did the environment collapse? And why does this ozone layer hold the key?

The Change She Leads

Knox’s journey is more than a fight for survival — it’s a mission to rewrite history. She becomes a voice for the planet, a symbol of what’s possible when girls lead with courage and conviction.

Her story reminds us that girls are not just victims of crisis — they are architects of change. Whether real or imagined, Knox represents every girl who dares to challenge the status quo, who dreams of a better world, and who leads us there.
