The project aimed at establishing an ozone observatory that would contribute to the strengthening of the East Africa and Indian Ocean observation network. It involved purchasing a mini-SAOZ instrument and providing training to technicians on the installation, maintenance and use of the instrument.
Through the support offered by both UNEP and WMO, a mini-SAOZ spectrometer that operates in the ultra-violet (UV) and visible ranges to measure the total column of ozone and nitrogen dioxide was purchased.
Additionally, experts from the Reunion Observatory provided technical training to operators through practical exercises which also included data intercomparison and calibration of the instrument. Those exercises allowed the technicians to independently install the mini-SAOZ at the Union Meteorological Directorate of the Comoros on 10 October 2023.
The instrument is operational, and the collection of data is ongoing. Data is being submitted to the World Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation Data Centre (WOUDC). Due to implementation delays caused by technical and administrative issues the project activity was completed on 30 May 2024.
