The Ozone Secretariat was saddened to learn of the passing of Margaret Aanyu in August. A dedicated public servant in Uganda’s environmental sector, she served with the National Ozone Unit at the National Environment Management Authority for 28 years (1995–2023) as National Ozone Officer and Environment Assessment Manager, making her one of the longest-serving officers globally.
During her tenure, Uganda achieved key milestones: ratification of five Montreal Protocol amendments; development and later revision of regulations on ozone-depleting substances; establishment of a licensing and quota system for CFCs and HCFCs; complete phase-out of CFCs; and extensive capacity-building initiatives.
Margaret’s professionalism and commitment greatly advanced Uganda’s compliance with international environmental agreements and strengthened its role in global ozone protection. Her legacy continues to shape environmental management in Uganda and beyond.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, colleagues, and all who worked with her. She will be remembered for her remarkable contributions and unwavering dedication to environmental protection.
