Energy efficiency and refrigerant containment in supermarkets
Time Description Venue
13:00
Organizer: United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Description: The presentation will showcase the results of two MLF/UNIDO projects implemented in Argentina:

1.     A demonstration project on replacement of high GWP refrigerants with trans-critical CO2 for warmer climate in a mid-sized supermarket, and

2.     An ongoing project for technical assistance and supply of equipment for the reduction of refrigerant leaks and energy efficiency enhancement to 29 supermarket

Energy efficiency in Servicing – past impacts of HPMP training and future potential
Time Description Venue
13:00
Organizer: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Description: GIZ will evaluate a number of training concepts from the past implementation of the HPMP, in view of their relevance to maintaining and/or enhancing cooling energy efficiency.

It will furthermore identify additional or future potentials and means for the implementation of energy efficient practices in servicing and use, as well as enabling framework conditions, such as norms, regulations and market measures.

CCAC Efficient Cooling
Time Description Venue
18:00
Background and Purpose

Cooling is central to health, prosperity, and the environment. Efficient cooling for all underpins many Sustainable Development Goals and represents an opportunity to avoid substantial greenhouse gas emissions. The IPCC Special report on 1.5C highlights an "action window" of about 12 years to ensure that we do not pass 1.5C and recognizes HFCs and energy efficiency as key areas of intervention. To respond to the 1.5℃ Degree Challenge, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition launched a new Efficient Cooling Initiative to build high level leadership and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders.

In this side event the Efficient Cooling Initiative and its Partners will showcase their work to catalyze ambitious action on efficient cooling through national cooling plans and country commitments. The initiative will also Introduce participants to the CCAC work on linking HFCs Energy Efficiency and Clean Air including the Stockholm Environment Institute's work updating the LEAP-IBC planning tool. SEI is working to update the LEAP-IBC tool to include all available refrigerants and link refrigerant and equipment choice to energy consumption, which would allow planners in countries using the LEAP-IBC tool to integrate the HFC phase-down and cooling efficiency into their climate and air quality planning and strategies.

Speakers:

  • Durwood Zaelke (Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development)
  • Juliet Kabera (Rwanda) (TBC)
  • Agustin Sanchez Guevara (Mexico) (TBC)
  • Nathan Borgford-Parnell (CCAC) – SEI's LEAP-IBC update
