Title: Accelerating the Destruction of ODS Waste: An Open Discussion on the Role and Lessons Learned of the Climate and Ozone Protection Alliance
Description: The global demand of refrigeration and air conditioning is rising and with that the stock of appliances and foams containing halogenated hydrocarbons, these are either ozone-depleting substances (ODS) or have a high global-warming potential for hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These so-called ODS and HFC banks are not being managed or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner and emit substances equivalent to approximately 1.5 Gt CO2 each year. Currently, there is no international agreement that addresses this challenge.
This side events reflects on the important role of the Climate and Ozone Protection Alliance (COPA) bringing together all relevant actors to jointly work on holistic solutions for a sustainable management of ODS and HFC banks. UNIDO and GIZ invite to debate how different aspects such as technology, regulatory frameworks, and financial mechanisms have been addressed in different contexts and countries. Success stories and lessons learned after two years of operation will be shared to encourage and inform new initiatives.

Title: A Transition to R290 and R600a for Commercial Refrigeration in Nigeria and Africa is Possible!
Description: Under UNIDO's HPMP Stage III project in Nigeria, there are plans to transition some R&A companies to either Hydrocarbons (R290 or R600a) or to R32 because of the readiness of the market to R32 than R290, at this period. The companies were grouped into different categories and some were identified for individual conversions.
The side event intends to highlight that transition to R290 is possible, especially in developing countries and a good example of UNIDO's drive in developing countries for low ODP and Low GWP refrigeration and Air-Conditioning.

Title: Setting the Path Forward Towards Environmentally Responsible Vehicle Thermal Management with Future Fluids and System Designs, Including Professional Service Practices and Equipment
Description: Future mobility is well on its way towards electric vehicles, which don’t have the ability to generate their own heat like an internal combustion engine. Current heating options reduce driving range (negating some of the environmental benefits of EVs) leading us to look at alternative vehicle thermal management system designs. This includes the best fluids to use to provide both heating and air conditioning at optimal efficiency. With concerns about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the time has come to consider what our future may look like with proposed alternative, natural and blend refrigerants.
This side event will present an affordable path forward for Article 5 Parties to implement sustainable refrigerants and reversable heat pump systems for electric vehicles with even more environmentally friendly refrigerants. In addition, we will explore the best service practices, tools and equipment that can be used RIGHT NOW by technicians in A5 countries and around the world to minimize the environmental impact of the existing refrigerants used in mobile applications.

Title: Framework for Integrated Heating and Cooling Action Plan for Cities
Description: Cities worldwide are grappling with rising temperatures and heatwaves due to global warming and urban heat island effects. This has sharply increased the demand for cooling, which in turn escalates energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
To address this dual challenge of extreme temperatures and rising cooling demand, many cities are developing Heat Action Plans (HAPs) to protect citizens and the economy from severe heat impacts. Simultaneously, several countries have developed National Cooling Action Plans (NCAPs) to focus on long-term sustainable cooling solutions. Although HAPs and NCAPs share common goals, they are often developed separately by different agencies, leading to gaps and inefficiencies.
This side event will present an integrated framework for addressing both heating and cooling at the city level. Experts will share lessons learned from India and other countries, identify evolving needs, strategize to overcome implementation hurdles, and discuss the necessity of a global program to support cities.
